Rescued Photo Album Part 6 - Ward and Pettyjohn Families of Randolph County, Indiana

I am currently adding new genealogy posts on my new blog The House That Never Slumbers. Please visit me there!

For an explanation of how these photographs came into my possession, please see my prior post Rescued Photo Album Part 1.  To view a family tree I compiled for some of these individuals, please see Rescued Photo Album Part 2

The next two photos are my favorites from the Ward and Pettyjohn Album.  According to the labels, the photos display a young boy (surname Riggins) before and after a haircut.  I think without the labels one would assume the first portrait to be a girl.  The young lad does not appear to be all that happy about his new hairdo.

Rescued Photo Album Part 5 - Ward & Pettyjohn Families of Randolph County, Indiana

I am currently adding new genealogy posts on my new blog The House That Never Slumbers. Please visit me there!

For an explanation of how these photographs came into my possession, please see my prior post Rescued Photo Album Part 1.  To view a family tree I compiled for some of these individuals, please see Rescued Photo Album Part 2.

I believe the subject of the following photos to be Joab Ward, Jr., son of the Joab Ward pictured in my previous post.  The notes on the first two photos identify this man as Joab Ward, the uncle of Asa Pettyjohn.  That would make the man in the photo Joab, Jr.  I think the Joab Ward in the last photo appears to be the man pictured with Ruth (as opposed to Joab Ward, Sr. pictured with Amy Graves Ward in my previous post).

Rescued Photo Album Part 4 - Ward & Pettyjohn Families of Randolph County, Indiana

For an explanation of how these photos came into my possession, see my prior post Rescued Photo Album Part 1.  To view a family tree I compiled for some of these individuals, see Rescued Photo Album Part 2.

Edith Ward was a daughter of Joab Ward, Sr. and Amy Graves Ward.  Edith married John Moffitt.

The next photo of Edith gives her age as 75 and appears to be dated '04 which would establish her birth date as somewhere around 1829.  A note on this photo also indicates Edith was a sister of Eleanor Ward.

Rescued Photo Album Part 3 - Ward & Pettyjohn Families of Randolph County, Indiana

I am currently adding new genealogy posts on my new blog The House That Never Slumbers. Please visit me there!

For an explanation of how these photos came into my possession, see my post Rescued Photo Album Part 1.  Not all of the photos included in the album were original photos.  Some of the pictures were modern 4 x 6 prints where someone had taken a picture of the original portraits with a modern camera.  The following photos were some of those modern prints.  That's why you can see the brick in the background.

E. Tucker's History of Randolph County, Indiana 1882 indicates that Joab (this would be Joab, Sr.) and Amy were both born in North Carolina and migrated to Randolph County, Indiana.  All but one of Joab's siblings migrated to Indiana with the Quaker parents.  See the family tree I compiled in Rescued Album Part 2.

I am currently adding new genealogy posts on my new blog The House That Never Slumbers. Please visit me there!

For an explanation of how these photos came into my possession, please see my prior post Rescued Photo Album Part 1.  Before posting any additional portraits, I wanted to post a family tree.  When I look at a family album, I always want to know how the subjects are connected.  Since this family is not my own family, I did a bit of research in E. Tucker's History of Randolph County, Indiana 1872 to connect the dots.

The tree I compiled is as follows:

Descendants of Thomas Ward

Generation No. 1

1. Thomas1 Ward1.

Notes for Thomas Ward:
According to E. Tucker's Randolph County, Indiana 1882 (hereafter referred to as Tucker) p 327, this Thomas Ward lived in North Carolina during the time of the Revolutionary War. Although both sides tried to force him into military service, he did not fight because he was a Quaker. But his brother was an American Colonial. This information conflicts with information I have read in other places stating that this Thomas Ward fought in the Revolution.

Here are photos of a Thomas Ward and a Mrs. T. Ward.  The notes on the first photo indicate that this not the Thomas Ward who may have fought in the Revolutionary Ward, but rather, a grandson.  This could possibly be the son of Joab Ward and Amy Graves listed above with several wives.  A note on the second photo identifies this lady as Mrs. T. Ward.  Assuming the T. stands for Thomas, I wonder which or the many Mrs. Thomas Wards this would be???

Rescued Photo Album Part 1 - Ward & Pettyjohn Families of Randolph County, Indiana

I am currently adding new genealogy posts on my new blog The House That Never Slumbers. Please visit me there!

Several years ago my parents purchased an album of very old photographs at an auction.  The people in the pictures are not related to us (not that we know of anyway, but it's Randolph County, so you never know), but my parents couldn't bear to see this beautiful album go to the trash heap.  Fortunately, the subjects of the portraits were mostly labeled, so I was able to piece together bits of the family history.

I posted on a couple of different genealogy message boards saying that I had the album if anyone would like to see the pictures, and I ended up mailing a CD of the photos to several researchers.  Then I had a computer crash, and I still haven't been able to find my backup CD of those photos.  I recently took the time to scan all the photos again because I've had a number of researchers contact me about them.  I've decided to focus this blog on the Ward & Pettyjohn Photo Album for the next several posts, since blogging about the photos seems like a simpler way to share them with many people.  I don't know how much time I will be able to devote to blogging through the holiday season, but I'm going to make an effort to post photos regularly.

I've decided to start with Margery (or is it Marjorie?) McKew simply because I received an email about her a few days ago.  The notes written on the photo seem to indicate Mrs. McKew was the sister of both Eleanor Ward and Joab Ward (I think Joab Jr. would be this lady's brother).  Perhaps Margery was named after her grandmother, since many family trees on Rootsweb have the senior Joab Ward's mother listed as Margery Piggott (while others list his mother as Margaret Piggott).  Stay tuned for more photos and a family tree of the Ward & Pettyjohn families of Randolph County, Indiana!

I Study Dead People - How I Became a Genealogy Junkie

I am currently adding new genealogy posts to my new blog The House That Never Slumbers. Please visit me there!

For me, it all started with a box of old pictures.  One year a man came to our annual family reunion.  He was from a maternal branch of the family, and he was working on a large family history project.  Our family happened to be one of the branches of the Joshua B. Sharp Family.  He was recruiting family members to collect data on living ancestors and to digitize old photographs.  I was one of the youngest people at the family reunion, and at that time, one of the few computer users.

This man's presentation at the reunion prompted my great-aunt to go into her attic searching for a box of photos she had acquired upon the death of her mother (my great-grandmother).  The photos were thrown haphazardly into the box through the years.  Very few of them were labeled.  My grandpa and my great-aunt were able to identify some of the subjects, but there were many others they did not know.  I was intrigued.  I wanted to know the identities of those in the photos - stern-faced older ladies, working men, young couples full of promise, small smirking children.  These were presumably my people, but how did they connect to me?  I was quickly hooked on the search.

My aunt allowed me to borrow the box of photos in order to scan them and save them to CD's that could be distributed to other family members.  While the photos were in my possession, I spent hours pouring over them with a lighted magnifying glass in hand (this is a great tool for genealogist, by the way).  I was slowly able to provide labels for more and more individuals by comparing between photos.  Sometimes one photo would provide a name or two that I could use to identify the same child in another photo.  By emailing photos to other members working on other branches for the family history project, I was able to find distant cousins who also had copies of some of my photos which had been labeled by their ancestors.

Of course, it wasn't enough to just put names with faces.  Once I knew the names, I needed to know their stories . . .
